Women’s History Month: Celebrate, Honor, Preserve Women’s History

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re celebrating, honoring, and advocating, and you can too!  Here’s how:

Advocacy:  Our neighborhood contains a treasure trove of women’s history, in some cases still unprotected and unrecognized.  Much of that can be found in Greenwich Village and the East Village South of Union Square, an area for which we are seeking landmark protections.  There you’ll find historic sites connected to the fight for women’s suffrage in New York, the first woman doctor in America, The Feminine Mystique, early birth control, Miss America protests, Billie Holiday, Anais Nin, Audre Lorde, Zora Neale Hurtson, Joni Mitchell, Nan Goldin, Lillian Wald, Agnes de Mille, Ronnie Spector, and so many more. Read our letter to the Mayor and Landmarks Preservation Commission pointing out this vital unprotected history and urging them to move ahead with landmark designation here.
