Hearing on Landmarking 70 Fifth Avenue Set for Tuesday 3/23 — Support Designation and Push for All of South of Union Square

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has scheduled its hearing on the proposed landmark designation of 70 Fifth Avenue (13th Street) for Tuesday, March 23rd (time during the day TBD; we will share the meeting time when it becomes available on Friday). This is one of many buildings in our proposed South of Union Square Historic District about which Village Preservation has been providing in-depth research to buttress our push for landmark designation. The building has an extraordinary history as the former headquarters of the NACCP and the Crisis Magazine, as well as an incredibly array of civil rights and social justice organizations.

After many months of effort, we are thrilled to see the Landmarks Preservation Commission moving ahead with designating this building, and we want to urge support for designation.  But we also want to urge the Commission to consider the entire proposed South of Union Square Historic District, which includes many buildings like this with rich civil rights and social justice history.
