Celebrating Lower East Side History Month and Honoring Charles and Kathy Fitzgerald at the Village Awards

May is Lower East Side History Month, a time to reflect on the rich tapestry of cultures, stories, and activism that have shaped this iconic New York neighborhood. This year, our Annual Meeting/Village Awards celebration will be especially poignant as we honor Charles Fitzgerald and his wife, Kathy Cerick Fitzgerald, who will be recipients of the prestigious Regina Kellerman Award from Village Preservation for their work in the East Village/LES.

The Regina Kellerman Award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to preserving our neighborhoods’ cultural and architectural heritage. Charles Fitzgerald and Kathy Cerick Fitzgerald have been stalwarts in this mission, working tirelessly to promote and protect the unique character of the East Village amidst the pressures of development and gentrification. Their extraordinary story of life and business on St. Mark’s Place over decades exemplifies the beating heart of our neighborhoods. Through their hard work and creative enterprise, Charles and Kathy have been a shining example of the spirit of grassroots activism that has long been a hallmark of the Lower East Side.
