Campaign to Restore 34½ East 12th Street, the Neglected Police Athletic League Building, Moves Ahead

We have some good news in our campaign to get 34½ East 12th Street, the landmarked city-owned Police Athletic League Building located just east of University Place, repaired and restored. At Village Preservation’s request, last week Community Board 2 passed a strong resolution calling upon the City to immediately fix the long-neglected 1855 historic structure which has sat under a scaffolding for about 20 years, and to consider long term plans for the building’s future. And this past week, Councilmember Harvey Epstein, with whom we have been working closely, wrote the Mayor calling for the same and asking for a meeting with city officials for him and local stakeholders to discuss the building’s status and future.

Landmarked in 1998, the building was the city’s first school and high school for girls, and holds an enormously important place in the history of educational reform for women and girls. It’s been virtually unoccupied with a poorly maintained sidewalk shed for scaffolding around it for two decades with no repairs and deteriorating conditions. Village Preservation’s is spearheading a campaign to get the building repaired and examine the best uses of it for the future to ensure its preservation and make the best use of this unique historic resource.
