Celebrate the Art Deco Centennial July 30

Next Wednesday at 6 pm, join us for a FREE live virtual celebration of the centennial of Art Deco, with a program featuring Village Preservation Executive Director Andrew Berman: “Art Deco Centennial: A Guide to the Jazz Age Style in Our Neighborhoods, City, and World.” The lecture will take a look at how the colorful streamlined style crystallized in 1925, the prior styles that served as its foundation and inspiration, and how it spread to and completely transformed New York. We’ll then take a closer look at the many examples of the style — well known and easily overlooked — that appeared in Greenwich Village and the East Village. Q&A with Andrew will follow. The program dovetails with Village Preservation’s release earlier this year of its Art Deco Centennial Interactive StoryMap.

Next Wednesday’s event comes on the heels of our recent program about French Flats, the revolutionary 19th-century housing innovation that forever changed the way New Yorkers live. That program coincided with the release of our interactive StoryMap, which tells the story of the evolution of French Flats in our city and neighborhoods.
