Join Your Local Community Board — Applications Open NOW!

Applications are now open for Manhattan community boards. These bodies are supposed to represent the interest of local communities to city government, and play an enormously important role in shaping preservation and development issues, among many others. Their members are appointed by the relevant Borough President and City Council member.
A 2018 charter revision implementing term limits for community board members has resulted in radical change in the makeup and tenor of community boards. Combined with some elected officials making a concerted effort to stack community boards with pro-real estate, pro-development members, some boards have become increasingly unrepresentative of their communities, and increasingly hostile to preservation. This makes YOUR joining your local community board all the more important.
