Oversized and Monotonous New Development Proposed in Sullivan-Thompson Historic District; Hearing Monday

82-Spring-Street-proposal

This Monday, Community Board 2 will hear a proposal to build an oversized and overbearing new seven-story plus penthouse structure at 182 Spring Street at Thompson Street in the Sullivan-Thompson Historic District, for which Village Preservation secured landmark status in 2016. The proposed new building (full proposal here) bears absolutely no relationship to its surroundings, which are characterized by humanly scaled and simply but carefully detailed 19th- and early 20th-century buildings. While a new building may be appropriate (and inevitable) at this corner, the proposed design is completely unacceptable for this location, and should be rejected. To attend the virtual meeting at 6:30 pm on Monday, September 13, and for more information on the proposal, see details on our website HERE. A proposal for a rooftop addition to 396 West Street in the Weehawken Street Historic District will also be heard; more information HERE.
