Preserving the Best of Our Past Should Be Part of Our Future — Support Our Midyear Appeal

So much is in flux in our city, country, and world right now. But at Village Preservation, we focus on the local, to try to ensure the best of our past is preserved, even as we build a better future for all.

Preserved: 70 Fifth Avenue, the former headquarters  of the NAACP and other historic organizations; the Stonewall Inn; and most recently the Jacob Day House.

That’s what we’ve been doing since 1980, and it’s made us the largest membership organization in, and the guardian of, Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. In that time, we’ve won landmark protections for over 1,300 buildings in our neighborhoods, and zoning protections to guide new development for nearly 100 blocks. We’ve saved the homes of great artists like Frank Stella and Willem de Kooning from the wrecking ball, and secured groundbreaking landmark designations for civil rights sites like the former NAACP headquarters, the Stonewall Inn and Julius’ Bar, and the home of abolitionist Jacob Day at 50 West 13th Street. And we’re fighting for landmark designations to recognize and protect beautiful and historic sites in our neighborhoods critical to women’s history, Hispanic history, and the history of people with disabilities, while issuing hard-hitting reports that expose the flaws in the city’s planning and preservation policies.

We do more than just fight. We celebrate, educate, and uplift, with 80 free public programs annually, hundreds of online resources illuminating our neighborhoods’ remarkable histories, special programs to support local small independent businesses, and offering educational programs to thousands of children throughout NYC each year regardless of need or ability to pay.

Supporting small business, educating NYC students, and offering free programming are part of how we honor and aid our communities.

But we can’t do it without you. Donations and support from individuals like you make up 85% of our annual budget. You determine how hard we can fight, how much we’re able to celebrate, and how many we can reach and educate.

I hope you’ll consider a most generous donation to Village Preservation to support our midyear appeal. Ensure that 2025 is a year that builds on the best of our past, to ensure a better future for our neighborhoods.
