East Village Rezoning

Village Preservation was part of a coalition of neighborhood, housing, and preservation groups that successfully lobbied for a dramatic rezoning of the East Village in 2008. The old zoning had no height limits and was encouraging a spate of out of scale towers; it also encouraged the construction of dormitories by entities like NYU, which were becoming increasingly common in the area. The rezoning we secured imposed height limits where none existed before, dramatically reducing the size of allowable new construction, and removed the incentive for construction of dormitories, which adding in several areas incentives for the inclusion or retention of affordable housing.
