Village Preservation will be holding a forum with candidates for the 2nd City Council District (district map here).

Because of the decennial redistricting, this election is for a two-year term, and the district boundaries are new. This diverse district will now include all of Greenwich Village east of 6th Avenue and north of Houston Street, all of the East Village, NoHo, and the area around Union Square. The 2nd district is currently represented by City Councilmember Carlina Rivera, though as stated above the district boundaries will be changing.

The primary election will be held on June 27th, 2023, with early voting from June 17-25th. The general election will be held on November 7, 2023.

This will be a unique opportunity to hear from candidates about preservation, development, and planning issues in our neighborhood, and how they will deal with them as City Councilmember. So far, Allie Ryan has confirmed attendance. Carlina Rivera was invited but has declined to participate, as she also did in 2021. Juan Pagan registered to run in the Republican primary, but we have been unable to reach him to invite his participation.

There will be an opportunity for questions from the public moderated by the hosts, and the forum will be recorded and shared after. The City Council plays an enormously important role in land use, development, and preservation issues, particularly on the local level. They are local neighborhoods’ advocates and representatives to our city government.
