Curator Tour: Yaroslava Surmach Mills at the Ukranian Museum

Yaroslava Surmach Mills (1925–2008) was a Ukrainian American artist whose career spanned nearly sixty years. A graduate of The Cooper Union, Yaroslava was born to Ukrainian immigrant parents who owned a bookstore on East 7th St. Her unique reverse glass paintings, depicting Ukrainian folklife, were adapted from an ancient method for creating folk icons. Her professional career branched into several other fields such as book illustration, calligraphy, iconography, stained glass design, and more. Celebrate the upcoming East Village Ukrainian Festival (May 18-20) with this tour, followed by a trip to Veselka.
