Historical Meander from the Bowery to Alphabet City
From the Native Lenape to street art; gentry townhouses to immigrant tenements; street grid to street markets; Kleindeutschland to Losiaida; natural topography to community gardens and more, we will make use of four historical maps to guide our explorations into this historic area:
* The 1767 Ratzer Map
* The early 19th century Randel Composite Farm Map
* The 1811 Plan Map
* The 1874 Viele Topographical Map
This interactive tour will highlight the many layers of history that came before, and that continues to define these areas today.
David Schmidlapp, our guide, is a downtown artist and a Village resident of 45-plus years. He is also a licensed New York City tour guide who does photo and walking tours, which are always seeking insights and hidden treasures amongst our well-trodden cityscapes.
