Co-sponsored by the Merchant’s House Museum
Take a trip back in time with us to old New York. Village Preservation members at the “Sustainer” level and above are invited to join Merchant’s House Museum’s Head Gardener John Rommel for an private tour of their beautiful and lush 19th-century garden in full bloom. This is an exclusive opportunity to explore this hidden oasis. Learn how John transformed the space into a little slice of paradise and what it takes to keep this garden in pristine condition in a modern urban environment and a changing climate.
Dating from 1832, the Merchant’s House Museum is considered one of the finest surviving examples of domestic architecture from the period. The late-Federal and Greek Revival home is a designated landmark on the federal, state, and city level. Don’t miss this chance to explore this special part of a rare survivor from our city’s past.
In addition to the private garden tour, enjoy the crisp autumn morning with a special members’ reception that will include some warm cider and autumnal treats.
John Rommel has been a Merchant’s House Museum volunteer since 1995 and as Head Gardener created their secret garden twenty years ago, and has been caring for it ever since.
