This workshop explores the Village as the second birthplace of Hip-Hop culture. It highlights the people and places where the elements of Hip-Hop Culture first came together in the Village between 1979-1984. Essential Question- How do artists organize and promote their folklore & subcultures in New York City?

We offer three in-class lessons and a walking tour:

Session 1: Students will learn about how & where the elements of hip hop came together in the Village; learn about hip hop as an emerging youth culture in NYC and then critique them from their perspective as teens 45-40 years later.

Session 2: Graffiti 101- Students will learn the fundamentals of graffiti writing and create their own pieces

Session 3: Culminating Event- Students will present their insights around hip hop culture and graffiti pieces to an audience.

Walking Tour: Student will be led on a tour around the Village to sites where the elements of Hip-Hop culture first came together in between 1979-1984.
