Big NoHo Hearings on Three Huge NoHo Projects this Thursday and Tuesday: Write + Testify!

Proposed buildings at 375 Lafayette Street (top row), 56 Great Jones Street/354 Bowery (bottom left), and 27 East 4th Street

Three huge projects within one block in NoHo will be considered by Community Board 2 Thursday evening, and one, 354 Bowery/56 Great Jones Street, will be heard next Tuesday by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which ultimately decides what is or is not allowed. Fortunately, Community Board 2’s Landmarks Committee strongly rejected all three applications as currently configured. Here are details:

  • 375 Lafayette Street: a huge, monotonous proposed 19-story, more than 195-ft.-tall development on the site of a parking lot at Great Jones Street in the NoHo Historic District Extension. Watch Village Preservation’s testimony opposing the design HERE condemning the size of the proposed design and its unrelieved mass and facade, particularly on Great Jones Street. This application is tentatively scheduled to be heard at the Landmarks Preservation Commission on March 10 (updates to follow).
  • 27 East 4th Street: a proposed nine-story, 105-ft.-tall building next to the Merchant’s House Museum within the NoHo Historic District Extension, which the museum says will cause irreparable damage to their structure. Watch Village Preservation’s testimony HERE. The date of the Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing for this item has not yet been set (updates to follow).
  • 56 Great Jones Street/354 Bowery: a huge planned 25-story, more than 275-ft.-tall development outside the bounds of any landmarked district, but cantilevering over part of an adjacent building within the NoHo Historic District Extension at 354 Bowery (only the cantilever requires landmarks approval). Watch Village Preservation’s testimony HERE condemning the overwhelming scale of the building and the failure of the developer to make any attempt to accommodate the design to its historic NoHo surroundings. This will be heard by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) on Tuesday, February 24

It’s critical that we have a strong turnout for Thursday night’s Community Board meeting and the LPC hearing Tuesday, as the developers are rallying supporters of their plans.
