Continuing to Demand Accountability and Changes for 388 Hudson and Tony Dapolito Center Plans

Village Preservation continues to push back hard on the City’s poorly designed plans for a 400 ft. tall tower at 388 Hudson Street, which is premised on the demolition of the beloved, landmarked Tony Dapolito Recreation Center. The planned tower looks like a giant cheese grater that would dwarf the neighboring Greenwich Village Historic District and JJ Walker Park. And the developer chosen for the “affordable housing” portion of the tower (which would in many cases require six-figure incomes far above the median for NYC) has been named one of the “100 Worst Landlords in NYC” for racking up over 1,000 HPD violations and evicting a raft of low-income tenants. The City has also failed, in spite of repeated requests, to include any details on agreements that would ensure the “affordable housing” remains permanently affordable as claimed.
Many of these issues were recently covered in an extensive article about the plans — read it HERE.
The city cannot move ahead on plans for either 388 Hudson Street or the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center until an extensive public review and approval process takes place which is yet to be scheduled. Our allies at the Coalition to Save the Public Recreation Center Downtown recently uncovered documents proving that the city’s own analysis showed that the Dapolito Center can be repaired and reopened, in spite of years of claims to the contrary.
