Greenwich Village Historic District Turns 57!

The Greenwich Village Historic District, still our city’s largest historic district and one of its first large-scale landmarked districts, was designated on April 29, 1969. Covering dozens of blocks and 2,300 buildings from University Place to Washington Street, West 13th Street to St. Luke’s Place, the district forms the heart of Greenwich Village. It is one of the most historically significant neighborhoods in the country and world, rich with not only charming architecture but innumerable sites where historic figures lived and history was made. Village Preservation was initially founded in 1980 to serve as a steward for the district, but has since expanded our mission considerably in terms of geography and focus.

Our updated, revamped interactive Greenwich Village Historic District Map allows you to explore the district’s rich history, with then-and-now photos and tours of everything from artists’ homes and haunts to sites that inspired Edward Hopperwriters’ domiciles to legendary music venueschurches and theatersBlackLGBTQ+, and women’s history; and so much more.

This is one of dozens of maps Village Preservation has designed to explore the history of our neighborhoods; explore them all HERE.
