Huge Turnout for SoHo/NoHo Hearing, Housing/Tenant and Neighborhood Groups United in Opposition

We had a huge and united turnout on Wednesday at our press conference opposing the Mayor’s outrageous SoHo/NoHo rezoning plan and the Community Board 2 public hearing that followed. We were joined by local, city, and statewide affordable housing/tenant groups, SoHo, NoHo, Chinatown, and Lower East Side groups, and citywide and statewide historic preservation organizations to blast the Mayor’s plan and call for its disapproval. We were also joined by Christopher Marte, the leader and apparent winner in the Democratic Primary for City Council District 1 (in which most of the rezoning is located), who also urged that the plan be voted down. We had a packed, standing-room-only house at the huge St. Anthony’s hall, and overwhelming opposition to the plan at the hearing. Read the press release here, see pictures here, and read/watch coverage here and here. You can also watch the full press conference below.

After the community board’s vote, this will go to the Borough President, City Planning Commission (controlled by the Mayor), and the City Council, where its ultimate fate will likely he decided by local Councilmembers Margaret Chin, Carlina Rivera, and Corey Johnson. We’ll inform you of, and need you to attend, subsequent public hearings.
