On Monday the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) issued a fallacious report claiming that landmarking lead to the loss of affordable housing in New York City. The report used datasets created by independent researcher John Krauss, who did not work for REBNY and was not involved with the report, looking at the change in rent-regulated housing throughout New York City from 2007 to 2014.

In response, GVSHP teamed up with the researcher and affordable housing advocates to slam and refute the report’s spurious conclusions, which Krauss called “meaningless” and a “false correlation.”  In fact, his more accurate analysis of the data found that rent regulated housing units are often better preserved in landmark districts than in comparable, non-landmarked areas.  GVSHP and a leading affordable housing advocate also slammed REBNY’s self-serving, false, and misleading claims.
