Victory: Demolition Plan for 139 Thompson Rejected!

We have good news to report — Tuesday the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) rejected an application to demolish the landmarked 1875 Neo-Grec tenement at 139 Thompson Street we got landmarked in 2016 as part of the Sullivan Thompson Historic District. The Commission denied the owner’s claim that the building couldn’t be repaired, and instead directed the owner to return with a plan for restoration, as we had called for.
Village Preservation, working with Councilmember Marte, fellow preservationists, Community Board 2, and neighbors, had long opposed the demolition plan, including with our February rally. Demolition would not only destroy history, but also 19 apartments, 12 of which were affordable rent-stabilized, and replace them with 6 superluxury units. The LPC not only cited testimony from us and others in their deliberations, but acknowledged the over 450 letters they received urging denial of the application generated by Village Preservation’s campaign.
We will continue to closely monitor the situation and advocate for full restoration of the building after years of neglect. Thank you to everyone who supported this campaign and helped secure this victory!
