Located within the South Village extension of the Greenwich Village Historic District Village Preservation proposed and got landmarked in 2010, these rare, historic early 19th century structures faced the threat of insensitive alterations and possible demolition. These iconic buildings, at a critical intersection in the South Village, were in and of themselves historically and architecturally significant enough to warrant landmark designation; however, there is also evidence to indicate that they may have served as the inspiration for the renowned Edward Hopper painting Early Sunday Morning (1930).
