Supporting Small Businesses

Help Keep David’s Shoe and Watch Repair, Beloved Neighborhood Store for 40 Years, on Hudson Street

David’s Shoe and Watch Repair has been a valued part of our neighborhood on Hudson Street for 40 years. David’s lease expires at the end of June, and his landlord is asking a further 60% increase to renew (following a 25% increase in January) — far more than the business can support. Ask the landlord and his agent to work with David so that he and his business can remain in the neighborhood.

Village Preservation works to support, promote, and protect small independent businesses in our neighborhoods. We do this through our Business of the Month, Welcome to the Neighborhood, and Small Business, Big History programs, and through our Annual Village Awards. We have advocated for businesses facing unfair evictions or rent hikes, and for legislative measures that would help to preserve small businesses. These have included initiatives that would help limit rent increases for commercial tenants, as well as zoning regulations that would restrict chain stores in certain locations.

Business of the Month

Every month, Village Preservation honors an independent store that has made a special contribution to Greenwich Village, the East Village, or NoHo. Nominate a business for this program here!

Celebrating 100 Businesses of the Month

On February 24, 2023, Village Preservation named its 100th Business of the Month, a milestone for the program, which started in 2014. In honor of the occasion, we produced this video spotlighting some of those amazing businesses. Enjoy!
