Co-Sponsored by Lower East Side Preservation Initiative, East Village Community Coalition, and Goethe Institut New York
The magnificent Church of Most Holy Redeemer on East 3rd Street is in danger. Sadly, the church, constructed in 1852 with 1913 alterations, recently announced that it would no longer be open. With the archdiocese regularly closing and demolishing churches around the city, we need to make sure that this beautiful sacred place will stay active and alive.
Dena Tasse-Winter of Village Preservation will discuss Most Holy Redeemer’s architecture, history and current preservation challenges. Additionally, Dr. Richard Haberstroh will present on the Lower East Side’s Kleindeutschland neighborhood, which more than a century ago provided the early congregants to this important church.
The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer has been an East Village beacon — architecturally and spiritually — for almost two centuries. To help protect this important building, in December, Village Preservation with LESPI and East Village Community Coalition submitted a Request for Evaluation to the NYC Landmarks Commission to designate the church property a NYC landmark. We’re also coordinating with the parish congregants who are working hard to reopen the church.
