This program is co-sponsored by the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition
Join the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition and Village Preservation for a talk by historian Daniel Levinson Wilk on the historic 1911 fire and its impact on the community and eventually the country and beyond. In “The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: A Local Tragedy Felt ‘Round the World,” Professor Levinson Wilk takes us back to the Greenwich Village of the early 1900s, with its tenements populated by thousands of immigrant families, and the immigrant laborers, many of whom worked in area sweatshops.
The talk will be accompanied by a pop-up exhibit featuring replica shirtwaists, historic news clippings and photos.
Please note seating is on a first come first serve basis.
Daniel Levinson Wilk is Associate Professor of American History at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, a member of the board of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, and until its recent demise, Associate Director of the Elevator Historical Society in Long Island City. He writes about the history of waiters, elevators, and the modern service sector.
