233-37, 239, 241, 243, 245, 247, 249, 251, 253, 255 Bleecker Street (r. to l.)
Village Preservation fought for and secured landmark designation of all these buildings in 2010. The organization was particularly concerned about the fate of 233-37 Bleecker Street, which in the early 2000s was showing signs of significant deterioration. The early 19th-century wooden and masonry buildings may have served as the inspiration for Edward Hopper’s iconic painting “Early Sunday Morning” — more here.
