Village Preservation’s innovative outdoor public art exhibition, VILLAGE VOICES, celebrated and honored the artistic, social, political, and cultural movements of our neighborhoods and the people who gave them voice.

Throughout the fall of 2021 and 2022 Village residents and visitors were treated to 31 distinct and engaging shadowboxes, and two multifaceted interactive installations that were displayed throughout Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. The exhibits featured photographs, artifacts, and soundscape recordings that gave inspiring insight and illuminated the incomparable history and heritage of the communities we serve.

We’ve gathered all the exhibits here for you to visit (or revisit) and explore the extraordinary people, places, and events that have been instrumental in changing our world. Just click on each image below to connect with each individual site and listen to Rachel Maddow, Norman Reedus, Ed Norton, Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ronson, Grace Gummer, John Leguizamo, Blythe Danner, Kathleen Chalfant, Oskar Eustis, and other Village residents and supporters who lent their voices to this project.

VILLAGE VOICES is dedicated to

Arthur A. Levin, Village Preservation’s President Emeritus, whose devotion, wisdom, and steady hand has guided this organization for many, many years.

The marvelous trailblazers of our exhibition who have led the way and continue to inspire us onward.

The artists, commentators, documentarians, filmmakers, historians, journalists, musicians, narrators, oral historians, photographers, preservationists, professors, and experts who raised their voices to celebrate our subjects.
