The settling in of cold weather has us here at GVSHP feeling a little nostalgic for snowfalls past. Images from the GVSHP archive of Washington Square Park covered in snow offer the perfect solution.

The Washington Square Arch framed in snow from this photo circa 1950 is doubly inspiring because of the family tableau. The photo is part of the New York Bound Collection, donated to the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation  in 1998.

The chilly and deserted park benches depicted in this image of Washington Square Park from the Nat Kaufman collection is quite a contrast from the more picturesque arch seen above. Kaufman was an avid photographer who lived in Greenwich Village.

The holiday tree in Washington Square Park is an annual tradition. This picture of the tree was taken by Nat Kaufman c. 1950 and is part of the Nat Kaufman Collection. The Washington Square Association, one of the oldest civic associations in New York, has sponsored the Washington Park tree since 1924. The 2011 tree, which was lit in a ceremony just last week,  is ready for visitors. Now all it needs is a little snow.

Images similar to these can be found on all sorts of GVSHP goodies, available for the holidays and year round.
