A Blog Post About Our Blog? Very Meta

Have you ever had one of those moments where you catch yourself talking about talking about something, and suddenly realize you’ve gone full Inception? Well, welcome to ours. Today, we’re writing a blog post… about our blog.

Yes, we know. Very meta.

But Off the Grid isn’t just any blog — it’s Village Preservation’s digital storytelling hub, where we explore the history, architecture, people, and culture of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. Since our first post in 2011, it’s been our space to dive deep into the fascinating corners of our neighborhoods — from the famous and celebrated to the quirky and forgotten.

Think of Off the Grid as a virtual stroll through the Village: one day you’re reading about the Provincetown Playhouse, the next you’re learning about some well-known, and some little-known (yet to be completely appreciated!) artists who once lived in the area South of Union Square, or discovering how a humble corner store helped change the course of music history. It’s equal parts history lesson, neighborhood storytelling, and love letter to the Village.

So why write a blog about the blog? Because Off the Grid deserves a little spotlight of its own. It’s where we share the stories that remind us why we do what we do — why fighting to preserve these neighborhoods is so essential. Every post is a piece of a bigger puzzle, helping us see not just what’s here now, but what came before, and what could be lost if we don’t protect it.

If you haven’t explored Off the Grid lately, consider this your invitation to jump in. Pick a story, any story — we promise you’ll come away with a new appreciation for the streets we walk every day.

And if you love it, share it! History only stays alive when we keep telling its stories — and we’re counting on you to help us spread the word

Ready to go off the grid with us? Enjoy!
