Village Preservation recently released an updated version of our Greenwich Village Historic District Virtual Maps and Tours. Originally released in 2019, it was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Greenwich Village Historic District. The map includes themed tours and an updated “Then and Now” map of the district witth photos from the 1960s when landmark designation was first being considered and today.

The updated “Then & Now” Map includes building footprints for every structure in the district. It allows users to search and select a building, prompting a pop-up with a photo of the building from the 1960s, and a contemporary image. The pop-up also includes a link to the designation report for the building, which includes information such as construction date and builder.

For 207-209 West 11th Street, the entry informs us that the building was constructed in 1916 and designed by architect Frank Vitolo, and includes a narrative on the building’s architectural details.

Another new facet of the map is that it includes information on new buildings constructed within the Greenwich Village Historic District. Using information from our New Buildings Approved for Construction within the Greenwich Village Historic District report, when users click on a building that has been constructed after the 1969 historic district designation, additional information is shown. As an example, we will take a look at 179-181 MacDougal Street, where a new building was recently completed.
