(r. to l.) 2, 4, and 6 East 12th Street. No. 2 is a largely intact grand Italianate-style brownstone-fronted rowhouse constructed c. 1857-58 for the prominent businessman and philanthropist John Schermerhorn Bussing. Nos. 4 and 6 are largely intact c. 1845-46 Greek Revival row houses constructed for the prominent businessman and philanthropist John Schermerhorn Bussing. No. 4 was the home of notable artists Reginald Marsh and Betty Waldo Parrish, and the pro-union composer Marc Blitzstein. It and No. 6 also housed the workrooms and showrooms of renowned fashion designer Jessie Franklin Turner. No. 6 was also the home of the prominent artist Rosemarie Beck and editor Robert Phelps, and in 1948 art dealer Lou Pollack opened the Peridot Gallery here, an important platform for abstract expressionist and other avant garde art.
