“The Lancaster” is a five-story building constructed in 1887 in a combination of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. Noted architect James Renwick designed the building along with his partners Aspinwall & Russell, and it is an innovative example of the French Flat middle-class apartment building. Musician Charles Mingus and lyric poet Barbara Young are among the building’s prominent residents.
