Joe Papp

Theatrical Pioneer and Preservationist
Papp was a legendary theatrical producer, who in 1967, in a coup of adaptive reuse, transformed the Astor Library building into a theater of, by, and for the people.

His Public Theater can be found at 425 Lafayette Street between Astor Place and East 4th Street.
