John Sloan
August 2, 1871- September 7, 1951

Ashcan School Painter and Illustrator
Depicting life with unflinching realism and immediacy, Sloan spent years capturing the working-class spirit in Greenwich Village.

Sloan painted in a studio at 2 Cornelia Street beginning in 1912. He later painted this Flatiron-shaped building in a night view — titled The City from Greenwich Village — with the Sixth Avenue Elevated careening across the sky.

Narrated by Darren Waterston
Music by Leroy Shield
