Important 388 Hudson Street Meetings This Thursday and Next Monday; Submit Your Online Comments NOW!

The city’s proposed tower (l.), which wouldn’t guarantee permanent affordability, and the massing we propose (r.) for a permanently affordable development.

Village Preservation is fighting to ensure that the proposed development on city-owned land at 388 Hudson Street is guaranteed as permanently affordable, and to eliminate the proposed 355-ft-tall tower configuration (the tallest ever in Greenwich Village) in favor of a lower, bulkier building that minimizes height and shadows on JJ Walker Park, while maximizing housing. The city is continuing to resist that effort.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Village Preservation recently met with Borough President Mark Levine and Councilmember Erik Bottcher to urge them to also advocate for these changes to the city’s plans. You can also tell the City these changes are essential.

HOW?

  • Sign up for and attend the 388 Hudson Street virtual “Community Visioning” meeting this Thursday, October 12 from 5:45 to 8pm (register here).
  • Fill out the “Community Visioning Questionnaire” here to provide feedback on the proposed project.
  • Attend and speak at Community Board 2’s Land Use Committee meeting next Monday, October 16 at 6:30pm at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 151 Sullivan Street (below Houston Street), basement — info here.

For all of these, we STRONGLY URGE YOU TO offer the following feedback:

  • The planned development must be guaranteed 100% permanently affordable, which the current plan does not do.
  • The tall, setback tower configuration must be eliminated, and replaced with a lower, bulkier building that sets back from JJ Walker Park and maximizes housing while minimizing height.
  • No all-glass structure, nor one with fortress-like walls with only tiny punched windows should be considered (these are two options being presented).

If you haven’t already, PLEASE send the most recent letters to city officials HERE telling them that current plans for the site are UNACCEPTABLE. Any plans MUST guarantee permanent affordability, and must get rid of the tower for a lower, bulkier building that minimizes height and impact on JJ Walker Park while maximizing the amount of actual housing that can be included.

If you have sent those letters, please ask at least two friends or neighbors to do the same.
