Important Public Meeting re 388 Hudson Street Plan Monday Night — Demand PERMANENT Affordability and No Tall Setback Tower

The City’s proposal for 388 Hudson Street (l.) and Village Preservation’s proposal.

Please attend and speak at the Community Board 2‘s Land Use Committee meeting this Monday, October 16 starting at 6:30pm at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 151 Sullivan Street (below Houston Street), basement — info here.

The committee will be discussing plans for an affordable housing development at 388 Hudson Street (at Clarkson Street) on city-owned land. Village Preservation welcomes affordable housing here, BUT we want to ensure it is guaranteed to remain permanently affordable, AND we don’t want the tall setback tower configuration (up to 355 ft tall — the tallest ever in Greenwich Village) the city is promoting. A lower, bulkier building that steps back from JJ Walker Park will minimize height while maximizing housing in the development.

Whether or not you can attend, please submit written comments to info@manhattancb2.org by noon Monday. WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO TELL COMMUNITY BOARD 2:

  • The planned development must be guaranteed 100% permanently affordable, which the current plan does not do.
  • The tall, setback tower configuration must be eliminated, and replaced with a lower, bulkier building that sets back from JJ Walker Park and maximizes housing while minimizing height. The height of neighboring large loft buildings is a reasonable benchmark for the building.
  • No all-glass structure, nor one with fortress-like walls with only tiny punched windows should be considered (these are two options being presented).

Please also fill out the “Community Visioning Questionnaire” the City has set up here, offering similar feedback.

Finally, if you have not already, please send our most recent letters to city officials urging them to abide by these parameters in planning for this development:

If you have already sent these letters, please share with two friends or neighbors and ask them to do the same. More info here.
