Of particular significance for Village Preservation’s first auction is this photograph by Greenwich Village-based photographer Neil Allen. It depicts Jefferson Market Library, one of the original successes of historic preservation in Greenwich Village and New York City. The structure, originally built as a courthouse in 1877, had so deteriorated by 1958 that it was closed and pending demolition. In one of New York City’s first grassroots preservation campaigns, the building was saved, repurposed, and renovated. Today the Jefferson Market Library is a beacon of pride and joy for the Greenwich Village community and a landmark of the importance and value of historic preservation. “Braving the Big Blizzard” was shot during the historic blizzard of 2016.
The newest item on our list is a very exclusive garden party venue in the East Village in a hidden paradise. The New York Marble Cemetery, designed as a proper English Garden, was designated a New York City Landmark in 1969 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is an entire half acre of sanctuary tucked away from the madding crowd. Since the early 2000s, the urban oasis has been offered for weddings and celebrations of all kinds and can be yours for a special occasion with the winning bid.
