City Council District 1 (South of Houston Street) Virtual Candidate Forum Tomorrow, Tuesday May 30 at 6pm — Register Now

The new City Council District 1 includes almost all of Manhattan south of Houston Street; candidates scheduled to attend include (from top): Christopher Marte, Susan Lee, Helen Qiu, and Ursila Jung.

Did you know we will soon have ANOTHER election for City Councilmembers, and that due to redistricting, those district boundaries have changed? June 27 is the primary election for City Council, with early voting from June 17–25.

Tomorrow night we will hold an online forum for candidates for the 1st Council District, which covers nearly all of Manhattan south of Houston Street (see map here). Scheduled to attend are incumbent Christopher Marte and challengers Susan Lee, Helen Qiu, and Ursila Jung, all vying for the two-year term. The forum will focus on issues connected to preservation, development, small businesses, and housing, especially issues like the SoHo/NoHo/Chinatown rezoning and efforts to ensure reasonable development in our neighborhoods and to protect historic landmarks and character. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.

City Councilmembers play an enormously important role in shaping and addressing these issues in our neighborhoods. And while as a 501(c)(3) organization we cannot tell you how to vote, we do encourage you to vote and to educate yourself about candidates’ track records and positions, and help provide tools to do so.

Earlier this month we held a forum for candidates for City Council District 2 (East Village, NoHo, Greenwich Village east of Sixth Avenue, and 14th-30th Streets/First to Fifth Avenues). You can watch the video here. In City Council District 3 (Greenwich Village west of Sixth Avenue), incumbent Erik Bottcher is running unopposed in the primary.
