Join Village Preservation as it hosts a book talk with author John Loughery on his recent publication Dorothy Day: Dissenting Voice of the American Century.

The founder of The Catholic Worker, Dorothy Day (1897 – 1980) was a progressive force in American politics and an orthodox Catholic who spent most of her adult years on the Lower East Side. Her late teens and twenties were spent in Greenwich Village where she was close to Eugene O’Neill, lived a freewheeling, libidinous life among her bohemian friends, and suffered from an abusive relationship with her charismatic lover. This talk will be about Day’s experience of Village life c. 1916 – 1930 and the ways in which that world formed her intellectual, political, and even her spiritual values.

John Loughery (he/him/his) is a cultural historian, art critic, and biographer who lives in New York City. His books include Alias S.S. Van Dine: The Man Who Created Philo Vance, which won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America; John Sloan: Painter and Rebel, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography; and The Other Side of Silence: Men’s Lives and Gay Identities, winner of a Lambda Award for Gay Studies. His most recent publication is Dorothy Day: Dissenting Voice of the American Century (Simon & Schuster), the topic of this book talk is a biography of America’s most ardent advocate for the homeless, most determined pacifist, vehement critic of U.S. foreign policy – and onetime resident of Greenwich Village.
