Carole Teller’s Changing New York: A Close Up on the Photos and the Photographer

Carole Teller is an artist and former art teacher who took photos of the Village in her spare time over the last half century. Carole donated a handful of the photos to Village Preservation in 2016 on a whim, and we were awestruck.

The photos tell an incredible story of a changing New York, from the early 1960s through the early 1990s, with a keen eye for capturing characters, places, and events in moments of transformation or disappearance. VP shared Carole’s photos with the public on our Historic Image Archive and they became an instant worldwide sensation.

Were these foretelling images carefully chosen or happy accidents? What caught the photographer’s eye? And how were the subjects and locations of hundreds of these pictures identified, sometimes more than fifty years after they were taken? Join us for a closer look at the collection and for an insightful conversation with Carole.
To celebrate, we’ll be uploading additional Carole Teller photos on our Historic Image Archive for the program!
