South Village Walking Tour: Architecture and Italian Culture

The South Village, south of Washington Square Park, is what many people picture when they think of Greenwich Village. Much of the charm of the South Village comes from its many original Italian-American businesses, some started over 100 years ago and now run by third and fourth generations. Images of the neighborhood contribute to such films as Godfather II, Raging Bull, Serpico, and Moonstruck. Join scholar and guide Joyce Gold to explore the enduring Italian-American presence, history, and architecture of the South Village Historic District, a neighborhood with a history that includes African-Americans, Irish-Americans, Italian priests, shop-owners, musicians, and politicians.
