Twenty Five Years of Village Preservation’s Spring House Tour
2026 marks a significant milestone for one of New York City’s most beloved traditions. For 25 years, Village Preservation’s Spring House Tour Benefit has invited guests inside some of Greenwich Village’s most extraordinary private homes, offering a rare glimpse into the neighborhood’s rich architectural heritage and the vibrant lives unfolding within its walls.
Founded by artist and real estate broker Jan Hashey, together with President of the Board of Trustees at that time, Judith Stonehill, and board members Mary Ann Arisman and Betsey Ely, the first House Tour was conceived as a way to highlight the homes and creative spaces of Village artists. It was called “From Stable to Studio,” and early participants included the Roy Lichtenstein Studio, the working studio of Diane von Furstenberg, the Stephen Weiss Studio, and the residences and studios of Jan Hashey and Yasuo Minagawa, James Powell, Jennifer Bartlett, and Michael Koch and Andrew Kohler.

Over time, the House Tour has expanded to showcase a wide range of residences spanning centuries of design and history, from Federal and Greek Revival houses to thoughtfully renovated apartments that blend historic character with contemporary living. Each home reveals a unique story, shaped by the individuals who have lived there and contributed to the neighborhood’s enduring spirit. As the event has grown, it has become a cornerstone of the organization’s work and a meaningful way to bring together Village Preservation supporters, neighbors, and visitors.

To mark this anniversary, this year’s house tour guide and map include a curated selection of notable sites along the route, from well-known landmarks to lesser-known spaces preserved through Village Preservation’s advocacy. Together, they offer a deeper understanding of Greenwich Village and the ongoing importance of preserving its character for future generations.
Today, the House Tour remains as vital as ever. It is not only a showcase of extraordinary homes, but also a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving the places that define New York City’s identity.
