Back to School with Village Preservation: Continuing Education, Children’s Education, and Neighborhood School Histories

New York City heads back to school this week. And there’s a wonderful array of ways you can also up your educational game with Village Preservation:
- Register for our October Continuing Education program for adults. Taught by a talented and knowledgeable mix of professionals, you will learn about historic preservation, the NYC landmark law, the influence of Classical architecture on the development of residential architecture, the evolution of regulatory reforms and zoning laws, and the realities of working with the Department of Buildings (DOB) and other NYC regulatory bodies today. Our acclaimed 22.5-hour course includes all recent NYS legal requirements for Continuing Education credit. This course is designed for real estate professionals but is also open at a discounted rate to the general public not seeking credits. Current VP members at the $50 level and above also receive a discount. Learn more and register here. Spaces are limited, so register now.
- Connect your school with our Children’s Education program, where students can learn New York City history and about the built environment using Greenwich Village as a living classroom and model. We have three curricula: Greenwich Village, Past and Present; Immigration in the South Village; and African-American History, Greenwich Village and Beyond. With the city’s first historic preservation children’s education program, we have served tens of thousands of students from all five boroughs, in public and independent schools. Fees for schools are low and will be waived or reduced based upon need, thanks to the generosity of our members and funders. Learn more here and encourage your school to sign up.

- Our September program calendar nearly reached capacity with registrations in August, but two of our eight planned programs have a few spaces still available, and you can sign up for the waitlist for the rest. Learn about Native American history in our neighborhoods, hear from acclaimed East Village author Ada Calhoun, explore vanished music venues in our neighborhoods and the places where early hip-hop history was made, find out the story behind local street names and directions, get an insider’s view of Jefferson Market Library and its clock tower, and learn more about the black gay writers who rewrote the rules on literature from our neighborhoods. Register and learn more here.
- Learn more about the history behind the schools in our neighborhoods. We have the greatest concentration in the world of schools designed by master school architect C.B.J. Snyder; explore them all. Learn about the African Free Schools located in our neighborhoods; pioneering progressive educational institution Little Red School House/Elizabeth Irwin High School; how the Hebrew Free School movement was launched in Greenwich Village and the East Village; some of the historic former schools in our neighborhoods and their new uses today; what was the largest school in the world when built, located in our neighborhood; W.E.B. DuBois’ history-making first Black history course, taught in our neighborhood; the founding of the West Village Nursery, a model progressive nursery school; and one of the first schools in New York for women and girls, whose building still stands in our neighborhood.
