Linda Yowell Collection - Village Preservation

This photo collection documents streets, buildings, and storefronts throughout Greenwich Village taken by architect and preservationist Linda Yowell. It often shows details of individual buildings, streetscapes, or the neighborhood that are about to be or are in the process of being restored, altered, or destroyed. This includes everything from small details on historic storefronts or rowhouses, to huge changes like the demolition of the Women’s House of Detention, which was a sea change for the West Village.

Some photos date to the early-to-mid-1970s, when Linda first moved to the neighborhood, while many were taken between 1997 and 1999 as part of projects Linda was commissioned as an architect to undertake.

Linda Yowell has been a Village Preservation Trustee since 1998. In addition to chairing Village Preservation’s Preservation Committee, Linda has also served as President of the Center for Architecture Foundation, Secretary of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and on the board of the Salisbury Association and the Historic House Trust of New York City.
